The “Day Without Immigrants” or “Un Día Sin Immigrantes” boycott happened Thursday in response to, among many recent events, an increase in immigration arrests by federal agents, anti-immigrant political rhetoric and President Trump’s travel ban. Hundreds of people missed school and work to show their solidarity with the immigrant community.
Some of the boycott participants were immigrants themselves who sought to show how much they contribute to American society. In Austin, several restaurants closed their doors in support — among these were Torchy’s Tacos on Lamar Boulevard, four McDonald’s locations and Pollo Regio on William Cannon Drive.
