Austin police have accused a man of stealing rent checks from a South Austin apartment complex last month by using a sticky compact disc, according to court documents.
Police said in an arrest affidavit filed on Friday that they think 32-year-old Manuel Lucio used a CD with adhesive tape on one side and a string tied to it to remove rent checks from a dropbox at the Cherry Creek Crossing Apartments on West Stassney Lane.
Authorities said an apartment complex employee saw a man around 4 a.m. on Feb. 28 standing next to the dropbox with a child. According to the affidavit, the employee said he watched the man use a CD and string to pull envelopes from the dropbox slot in the exterior wall of the apartment complex office.
After further investigation, police said surveillance video showed a man near the dropbox slot on Feb. 27 and 28, both times with a child, the affidavit said.
Police compared the man in the video to numerous booking photos of Lucio and eventually determined that Lucio matched the man in the video.
An arrest warrant for Lucio was issued Friday morning but he was not in Travis County Jail on Friday.
