Austin police are looking for a man accused of trying to steal a washer-dryer unit from an East Austin apartment he was evicted from last year.
According to an arrest affidavit, Jonathan Sanders, 43, tried to take the appliances Jan. 12 from a vacant apartment at the Shore District Apartments at 1333 Shore District Dr.
Police say Sanders was evicted on Dec. 15 from the apartment unit he was trying to rob.
On the afternoon of Jan. 12, an apartment manager was notified of two people who were moving the appliances out of the apartment. The affidavit says a maintenance employee stopped the two and asked who had authorized them to take the washer and dryer. The pair said they had purchased the appliances on a Craigslist ad for $350, according to the document.
Sanders then arrived and confirmed that he had listed the items on Craigslist, saying he had purchased them from the apartment and owned them. The apartment manager denied Sanders’ claim, the affidavit said.
Police found that Sanders was currently on federal probation for fraud convictions in Texas and Louisiana.
Police filed a warrant of arrest for Sanders on Wednesday. Sanders was not in custody Thursday evening.
